Topical Monthly Column

Now that old man winter has finally blown through, we can get to the task of beautifying our landscapes again. By now, all cold damage plants should be either pruned back or replaced. If you haven't yet fertilized, now is a good time. Use a complete fertilizer and apply as per label directions. With our generally sandy soils, fertilizing is very important to maintain plant vigor and health. Be sure and follow all directions and remember, it's better to apply frequent smaller amounts, then large amounts infrequently. Think of it like a person, small meals frequently is generally best for you and your plants. Use a high quality fertilizer. You do indeed "get what you pay for" withy fertilizer./ Cheap products contain more filler and have higher levels of chlorine and usually little or no minor elements. Minor elements are micronutrients that plants need for good health. For those of you who like to tinker, use a soluble fertilizer ( Miracle gro and Peters are two well known brands) in addition to your regular granular applications. It is especially enjoyed by annuals, roses, and vegetables.

With the more stringent phase water restrictions, it's vital to make sure your sprinkler system is properly adjusted and calibrated. You still need to apply 1 inch per week to maintain proper health on most landscape plants and turf. Some areas(hot spots) may require hand watering to keep from being damaged. Hopefully, Mother Nature will help out and continue with some occasional rain to keep things nice and green. By May, the summer rains will arrive and the drought talk will subside for a while, or at least until early next year.

We want to thank all our loyal customers as we celebrate our 30 th anniversary later this summer. One such gentleman called me this AM to inform me that he was downsizing and after twenty years, would regrettably no longer need our services. I joking reminded how old HE was getting(not me!) and me reminisced about the years gone by too fast. He assured me he would give our name to the new owners and I told him it was great to have him and his wife as such longtime customers. As I get older, I value these relationships more and more. It's very unusual in today's here today, gone tomorrow norm, that companies are around to cultivate long lasting relationships. Thanks again Dan and Jane!

As a precursor to our 30 year anniversary, we're offering some very good FREE specials this month. Check out our coupon page! Until next time...green grass and high tides.
